What beauty is waiting to be revealed?
Significant size of the structure
The 14th-century fortress, designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, is a Renaissance fortification that incorporates medieval structures, Etruscan and Roman artifacts, as well as remains of a hut settlement dating back to the transition between the Bronze Age and the Iron Age.
How did we reveal it?
Partnership with research institutes
The survey, commissioned by the Port Authority of Livorno, the current concessionaire of the site, was carried out under the supervision and in partnership with the DIDA department of the Faculty of Architecture in Florence (Prof. G. Verdiani) and was the subject of two degree theses. In this project, we tested specific techniques with the support of public partners (such as the Fire Brigade for safe access to underground cisterns) and delivered highly precise data, which has been—and will continue to be—used for restoration and safety interventions.
