For ongoing maintenance and studies, on one of the world's best-known monuments, the Florence Cathedral Opera asked us to survey the entire bell tower in millimeter detail in order to return to them a digital "copy" of both the metric and textural aspects of the bell tower.
How did we unveil it?
Laser scanner survey with ultra-high definition photogrammetry
Surveying an almost 90-meter-high monument with pinpoint accuracy seemed almost impossible. In returning the survey, then, the individual elements and marble inlays of the facades had to be digitally identified for archiving and scheduled maintenance. By combining laser scanner detection with ultra-high definition photogrammetry we returned "the survey" of Giotto's Campanile. Laser survey campaign of the interior carried out at night so as not to close the monument to tourists, photographic campaigns of the four fronts on an aerial platform up to a height of 90 meters; these are just some of the solutions adopted to be able to complete "the undertaking."
