Given the results of the surveys of Giotto's Campanile, the Opera del Duomo of Florence asked us to survey all the exteriors of the Cathedral of S. Maria del Fiore, while still supporting their technicians with specific surveys of areas under restoration.
How did we unveil it?
Laser scanner survey with ultra-high definition photogrammetry
Here the surveys were divided into phases that were in turn divided into zones. A general phase started to return the whole cathedral with the detailing and identification of individual elements of the exterior cladding for archiving and planned maintenance, and of this phase the Main Façade, the North Façade, and the upper part of the South Façade have already been surveyed and returned; a second phase, on the other hand, served to survey parts under restoration of the cathedral, the apsidal area on the south and part of the north, where the surveys served to support the restoration work and for the organization of the various construction sites.
Features and peculiarities of the project
- Fourth largest church in Christendom: 153 meters long, 39 meters wide at the aisles and 90 meters long at the transept, main facade height 51 meters and 91 of the dome;
- Very high detail survey on exterior facades.
